Mag Wheel Repair

Mag Wheel Repairs Australia

Everyone who calls The Wheelman asks for quotes for mag wheel repairs first. We are always willing to give people prices and time frames for the repair work, but every now and then we get the comment “I can buy new mags for that price”. Guess what? They are quite right.

There are many imitation mag wheels for European and Japanese cars that are cheap to buy, and even after market wheels range in price from $150 to $2000 per wheel.

So yes, you can buy cheap new wheels for the cost of repairing your existing factory wheels, BUT are you comparing apples with apples or are you comparing apples with oranges?

Most factory alloy wheels cost around $400 to $2000 per wheel. There are many imitation factory wheels and after market wheels that cost a mere $150 to $300. So why pay so much for the factory wheels? One reason is that you have to look at is the quality of the manufacturing and, unfortunately, you cannot see this with your naked eye.

There are many differences between factory wheels and these imitation wheels, but the most significant difference is the quality of the material used and the manufacturing process that was used to make the wheel. For example, was it dropped forged, cast, machined, annealed, or heat treated? And that is not even a complete list of wheel manufacture processes. To reiterate, you cannot detect the different processes using the naked eye alone when looking at the finished product. But they make a HUGE difference to the strength and durability of the mag wheel.

What you have to remember is that yes, the wheel looks great, especially on your pride and joy – probably the second most expensive item you will ever by (next to your house). But wheels must be durable and strong. Look at our roads – how many potholes can you see? Unfortunately, our roads are not in good condition and there are lots of bumps, potholes, and debris which can easily damage really well made alloy wheels, let alone the cheaper knock-offs or aftermarket rims.

Many people don’t think about this. They buy these cheap wheels, they look great and feel even better. But the first pothole, or debris, like a piece of timber, and the wheel gets a buckle or crack. Now what?

Unfortunately, these wheels are not economical to repair, so you have to buy a new wheel. Yes, the factory wheels or more expensive – aftermarket alloy wheels do cost more up front, but they are strong and durable and are able to withstand a lot more punishment that their cheaper counterparts.

So, over the lifecycle of the better quality wheel, they are much more cost effective.

In conclusion, you are better off to repair your factory alloy wheel, than buy a cheaper, not-as-good quality rim to replace it with. Contact The Wheelman today and enquire about our mag wheel repair services.
